Load Balancer: The Alpha Coyote Speaks on Application Delivery
April 18, 2011
By David Sims, TMCnet Contributing Editor
At New York Interop 2010, TMC CEO Rich Tehrani had the chance to interview Bill Kish (News - Alert), who has the coolest job title we’ve seen in a long time – “Alpha Coyote” at Coyote Point Systems.
Coyote Point is a provider of application delivery and acceleration products for the small to midsize business market that is focused on providing load balancer and application acceleration solutions.
During the interview, Kish said: “You can either keep buying bigger and bigger servers every year,” or do something less costly and more efficient.
Traditionally, of course e-commerce companies are the biggest buyers of such services, as they tend to have peak times around holidays and other yearly events – as well as sales, which as you can imagine produce load spikes as well. Kish said slow or non-responsive sites in such situations are “the kiss of death.”
But many other apps are delivered over the Web these days too – CRM as well as internal-facing app – and if they slow down the company’s also losing money through inefficiency.
Tehrani touched on the issues of customer satisfaction addressed by such technology, mentioning personal frustrations brought on by hearing that systems are slow in customer service centers. He remarked that anything a company can do to keep its customers from thinking “I wish I didn’t buy,” or “I wish I’d bought from someone else,” should be taken.
The ROI for such technology is fairly quickly found, just in gained efficiencies, buying fewer SSL certificates, and the like. Profitability goes up when productivity does, and latency to the end user is slashed, thereby increasing profitability.
Coyote Point’s acceleration and load balancer products are designed to let IT personnel have greater control over their Web and application servers. Coyote Point's Equalizer, Envoy and VLB products provide a combination of “performance, affordability and ease of use offering 24/7 server high-availability, optimized server and WAN performance, flexible scalability and secure application,” as the Coyotes say.
The whole idea of the cloud, being able to move resources around in no time at all, is where companies such as Coyote Point thrive. Speaking to his company’s particular value-add for this technology, Kish mentioned that they’ve been around for 10 years, they specialize in this and they’re focused on it: “We understand the protocols and applications involved very, very well.”
